There is know way we can watch a film for the first time again. We can go back and watch a film we have not seen for a while and relive it, but it will not be new. Every time I watch a Quentin Tarantino film for example, I make sure I am ready to watch it and make sure I take in the experience of his films. I do this because he is only making 10 films, and we are currently on 8.
So how do we watch films for the first time again, well we introduce them to the other people or the younger audience. My nephew is 11 and he likes films like Star Wars, Jurassic Park and all of the superhero films that are out. All of these films I watch and like, but this got me thinking about all of the films he has not seen yet. Films like Pulp Fiction, Shawshank Redemption and Fight Club! A film that you can only watch once, then you know exactly what’s going on.
Since he is 11 I cannot really introduce him to these films as they are way to violent and he will not be able to appreciate them yet. So I was trying to think of a film that we could watch, something that blew me away when I watched it for the first time. The film I chose was the Matrix. When I watched this film for the first time it was truly mind blowing, everything for the story to the visuals.
So we watched, as the story and world start to become clearer, I was excited for him to see what happens next. I did pause it when Neo takes the red pill and gets taken out of the Matrix, just so I knew he understood what was happening, which he did. As the film went on he asked a few questions, but by the end he was immersed and had even more question which I was able to answer.
By the time the film had finished it was getting late and it was his bed time. So as I said good night to him, tuck him into bed and said one last thing about the film to him, “what if the Matrix is real and we are in it right now?” He quickly said “well we are not, it was just a film”. He is right, but it got him thinking more about the film.
I envy how many good films he still has to discover, but there are still many films I have not seen yet. Films like Citizen Kane, Terminator 2, The Shinning [Mainly because I am too scared] and all of the Godfathers. I know right. If I could just sit and watch movies all day I think I would.
